Advances and Approaches in Glaucoma Treatment
Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that gradually damages the optic nerve, often linked to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). It is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, primarily because it progresses silently without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Early detection and effective treatment are crucial to prevent vision loss and maintain the quality of life for patients.
The cornerstone of glaucoma treatment is lowering intraocular pressure, which can be achieved through medications, laser therapy, or surgery. Eye drops are the most common first-line treatment. These medications include prostaglandin analogs, beta-blockers, alpha agonists, and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Each type works differently, either by reducing fluid production within the eye or enhancing its drainage.
